Tignes Ski Transfers
Sitting at the end of the Tarentaise Valley, Tignes has some of the longer ski transfer times in France. There are a number of airports which provide access to Tignes from France, Switzerland & Italy – with plenty of transfer options available to Tignes ski resort.
The large ski area and guaranteed snowfall in Tignes bring a huge number of international travellers during the winter months. Correspondingly, there are numerous transfer companies providing travel options between the nearby airports and Tignes. Private transfers are easily organised from almost all locations, whereas shared transfers are available from the busier airport sites only.
The closest airport to Tignes is the small, winter-only operation in Chambery. At a distance of 142km and with travel time of just over 2 hours, Chambery airport is a convenient option for cheaper private ski transfers – as long as you can find a reasonably-priced flight there. Shared transfers between Chambery airport & Tignes don’t tend to exist unfortunately because although it is a short journey time, there are too few independent passengers to make it economically viable to run.
Despite technically being in Switzerland, Geneva airport is the most popular airport for journeys to & from Tignes. The high number of low-cost European flights to Geneva has made it one of the busiest airports for skiers, and as such the number of transfer companies working from here make it easier to find travel options. At 170km and just over 3 hours, the transfer journey is a relatively long one, but the prospect of cheap flights and private or shared transfers to Tignes make Geneva airport an attractive option.
Grenoble isn’t the closest airport to Tignes (Chambery airport is), but it has become a well-used travel route due to the number of low-cost airlines flying from there. Grenoble airport lies 215km away from Tignes ski resort, and just under 3 hours drive on a good day. Due to its good motorway connections the journey is a relatively fast one, but be just aware that French toll road charges can add to the cost of a transfer.
Lyon airport is a an almost identical distance from Tignes ski resort as Grenoble airport (219km) and has a very similar transfer time of just under 3 hours. Once you are out of the mountain roads the journey passes by very quickly on the modern French highways, and access to the Lyon airport is very efficient. Although private transfers are easily arranged, shared transfers between Lyon airport & Tignes are much harder to find due to the reduced number of passengers using this transport route.
