If you’re planning your dream ski trip for the upcoming ski season, timing is everything! Whether you’re looking to avoid the crowds or dive head-first into the action, it’s good to know when the mountains are buzzing. The ski season typically kicks off in late November or early December and can now stretch well into May—thanks to some seriously late snowfall like we saw in the 2024/2025 season.
So when are the pistes packed, and when’s the snow at its absolute best? Let’s take a look at the busiest months of the ski season, the biggest events to watch out for, and the best time to carve up those powdery peaks.

December: Holiday Magic and Mountain Mayhem
The ski season truly kicks into gear around mid-December, with the build-up to Christmas marking one of the most exciting (and busiest!) times in the Alps. From around the 20th December through to the first week of January, resorts are absolutely buzzing.
Families flock to the mountains for a white Christmas, chalets are booked up months in advance, and the slopes are filled with festive cheer. If you’re dreaming of skiing into Christmas Eve or toasting the New Year at 2,000 metres, this is the time to do it. But book early—Christmas and New Year weeks are some of the most in-demand times of the entire ski season.
January: New Year, New Powder
As we roll into January, things stay busy—especially during that first week following New Year’s Eve. Resorts still have a lively buzz, but once that first week is over, things quieten down a little.
This is a great month for serious skiers and snowboarders. Conditions are usually top-notch, the snow is fresh, and the slopes are a little quieter (at least until the February half-term hits!). January also brings Rise Festival in Les 2 Alpes, a brilliant combo of music, partying and mountain fun. Expect live DJs, après action and loads of riders showing off their skills.

February: Peak Ski Season Madness
If there’s one month where the ski season goes into overdrive—it’s February.
This is when Europe’s school holidays take over, especially the infamous French winter vacances scolaires. Resorts get seriously busy, with families, kids, and snow-hungry students all flooding in. Prices spike, queues get longer, and availability becomes a game of luck. But if you love the atmosphere of a packed resort and you’re happy to book early, February is electric.
Snow conditions are usually ideal, too, with a deep snow base and (often) bluebird skies. But if you’re looking for quieter slopes, try the first week of Feb before UK and French half-terms kick off.
March: Sunshine, Snowparks & Snowboxx
March is a bit of a sweet spot in the ski season. The snow is still great (especially in high-altitude resorts like Val Thorens or Tignes), the days are longer, and the sun starts making more regular appearances. Basically, it’s perfect for those who love skiing and sipping rosé on a sun lounger mid-mountain.
This month also brings one of the biggest alpine music festivals of the year: Snowboxx in Avoriaz. Think epic DJs, ski-in/ski-out parties, and a full week of unforgettable fun on and off the slopes. March is also popular with groups and students—expect fancy dress, fun vibes, and a whole lot of après.
April & May: Spring Skiing and Late Ski Season Surprises
You might think April marks the end of the ski season, but thanks to that late snowfall we had in the 2024/2025 season, things now stretch on far longer than they used to.
Easter holidays bring families back to the resorts, and sunny days mean plenty of park sessions and slushy fun. For the die-hards, May skiing is now a real option—especially in high resorts like Val d’Isère, Tignes and even some glacier areas.
If you’re up for a more chilled-out, sun-soaked mountain experience (and don’t mind the occasional patchy run in the afternoons), late-season skiing is definitely worth checking out.
So… When’s the Best Time to Ski?
Here’s a quick breakdown of the ski season:
-
Best for snow conditions: January & February
-
Best for events & festivals: March (Snowboxx, Rise Festival, Rock the Pistes)
-
Best for families: Christmas & Easter holidays
-
Best for sunny après & spring vibes: Late March & April
-
Best for avoiding crowds: Mid-January & early March
