Tignes — Your Guide to the Nearest Airports

If you’re planning a trip to the ski resort Tignes in the French Alps — congratulations! Whether you’re heading there for snow, summer hiking, or glacier adventures, it helps to know the best way to reach this mountain gem. Here’s a breakdown of the nearest airports, travel times, and what to expect once you land.

Closest Airports to Tignes

  • Chambery is often described as the closest airport to Tignes

  • Distance: ~ 130–140 km depending on your route.

  • Estimated travel time by car or shuttle: about 2 hours (sometimes 1h45m if roads are clear).

  • Best if you find a flight there and want the fastest access to the slopes.

  • Downsides: It’s a smaller airport, meaning fewer flights / less connectivity compared to major hubs.

Geneva Airport (GVA) — International & Well-Connected

  • Many travellers use Geneva because it offers the most flights (especially from the UK and other countries).

  • Distance: ~ 165–180 km to Tignes.

  • Transfer time: roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on weather and traffic.

  • Great option if you’re flying internationally or can’t find suitable flights to smaller airports.

  • Transfers: shuttle buses, shared or private transfers, or car hire are common

Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport (GNB) & Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS) — Alternatives When Main Airports are Busy

  • Grenoble: distance to Tignes ~ 210–215 km.

  • Lyon: about 220–230 km to Tignes.

  • Travel time: generally around 2.5 to 3 hours, but can stretch to 3.5 hours depending on traffic or route.

  • Worth considering if flight availability or cost is better than to Chambéry or Geneva.

  • Longer drive, especially in winter — allow extra time for weather-related delays or traffic on mountain roads

Once You Land: Transfer Options to Tignes

  • From any of the airports above, you can choose private transfer, shared shuttle, car hire, or taxi/VTC depending on your preferences.

  • Some travellers prefer to take trains — for instance, to Bourg-Saint-Maurice station — and then a bus/taxi up to Tignes.

  • If you drive, be aware: mountain roads get busy on weekends (especially changeover Saturdays), and in winter snow tyres or chains may be mandatory.

Which Airport Should You Choose? — A Simple Guide

Want shortest journey time; small group; flight fits Chambéry (CMF)
Flying internationally; want many flight options Geneva (GVA)
Can’t get flights to smaller airports; open to longer drive Grenoble (GNB) or Lyon (LYS)
Flexibility & good transfer connections Geneva (GVA) ➝ private shuttle or shared transfer

"Seamless service"

I’ve used Snowcompare for the last few years. Transfers have always been easy to arrange and even when one transfer fell through due to the supplier double booking, snowcompare arranged an alternative quickly and without prompting. Excellent!

"Never fails"

Used snowcompare four times and each booking, journey and driver has been smooth as planned, punctual and helpful also when wanting to amend one of my routes by adjusting the return collection point. My most recent two drivers from .everyday transfer , got me up to arc 2000 from.geneva airport in record braking.time due to good knowledge of short cuts which avoided heavy traffic

"Good choice"

easy to navigate their web site, I made an error in my booking and they solved it very quickly for me, the communication between Snowcompare and their supplier can be hit and miss, but that is the supplier, not Snowcompare.
